Kaczmarek Departement of theoretical Physics, Tata Institute for fundamental Research, Homi Bhabha Road, Mumbai 400005, India Fakultät für Physik, Universität Bielefeld, Universitätsstrasse 15, D-33615 Bielefeld, Germany We investigate the Polyakov loop in different representations of SU(3) in pure gauge at finite T . We discuss Casimir scaling for the Polyakov loop in the deconfined phase and test and generalize the renormalization procedure for the Polyakov loop from [ 1] to arbitrary representations. In the confined phase we extract the renormalized adjoint Polyakov loop, which is finite in the thermodynamic limit. For our numerical calculations we used the tree-level improved Symanzik action on 32 × 4, 6, 8 lattices.

Renormalized Polyakov loops in various representations in finite temperature SU(2) gauge theory

We present results for the renormalized Polyakov loop in the three lowest irreducible representations of SU(2) gauge theory at finite temperature. We will discuss their scaling behavior near T c and test Casimir scaling in the deconfined phase. Moreover, we will compare these results to calculations for the renormalized Polyakov loops in several representations in the SU(3) gauge theory.

Finite Temperature Quark Confinement via Chromomagnetic Fields

A natural mechanism for finite temperature quark confinement arises via the coupling of the adjoint Polyakov loop to the chromomagnetic field. Lattice simulations and analytical results both support this hypothesis. Finite temperature SU(3) lattice simulations show that a large external coupling to the chromomagnetic field restores confinement at temperatures above the normal deconfining temper...

We discuss different aspects of the quark mass dependence of the chiral and deconfinement transitions. We make predictions for locating the deconfining critical point, by analyzing the mq dependence of the ratio of imaginary and real mass of the Polyakov loop. We then present an effective theory that allows the extraction of coupling constants from available lattice data for the temperature dep...

Screening of sources in higher representations of SU(N) gauge theories at zero and finite temperature

Completion of the Svetitsky-Yaffe conjecture in some (2+1) dimensional SU(N) gauge theories allows mapping Polyakov loops in higher representations of the gauge group into suitable conformal operators of the corresponding 2D CFT. As a consequence, the critical exponents of the correlators of these Polyakov loops are determined. The functional form of these correlators suggests a general Ansatz ...

Non-universality of string tension ratios and gluon confinement at finite temperature

We show that the Casimir scaling of string tensions observed in lattice simulations is naturally related to the smallness of the adjoint Polyakov loop in the confined phase. Particles in zero N-ality representations of SU(N) can be used to modify simultaneously the adjoint Polyakov loop expectation value, string tension ratios, and mixing between representations of the same N-ality. This leads ...
